How do I become a Car Designer?
Tip nr 1, keep up drawing and sketching it is the most important skill you will need as a car designer. Sketch anything & everything to practice your sense of proportions and shape, not only cars. In the beginning try to get influenced by other skilful designers and copy different styles, you will find your own style as time proceeds.

Apply to a traditional art/design school and get your bachelor degree then apply to a transportation or automotive design school for your master degree. While in school specialize your skills and get deep knowledge within a special field. In my case I studied a lot of computer graphics and animation to have advantage when applying for a job.

For inspiration look at Car Design News.

Which is the best car design school?
There are some famous car design schools around in the world such as CCS in Detroit, Artcenter in Pasadena and Royal Collage of Art in London. One of the best ones in my opinion is Pforzheim in Germany which I think had the best degree show off all last year.

I got my education from the Institute of Design Umeå Institute of Design in Umeå, it is a very nice school and clearly the best school in Sweden for transportation design. Great facilities and free of charge! The school is right at this moment planning on expanding its automotive design section. The government and some big companies in Sweden will put a lot of money into the school to make it more competitive on an international level.

How did you create your web page?
My web page is done primary in Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and ImageReady. Flash is great for nice fades etc but is tricky if you want to add features like guest book, pup up windows and search functions. I do all my web design with help of the programs, very little of my code is hand typed. Special thanks to my brother Martin Forsgren who helped me with the programming.

I use Levonline as web hotel
I get my web page statistics through Nedstat

Can I publish my work on the internet without people stealing my ideas?
I think people steel ideas or get inspired from everyone else all the time. Much of the new design around is actually redesign. On the other hand if you choose to not publish your work less people will be aware of you and your work.

What software do you use to design cars in?
There is really only one software used by the car design industry and that is Alias Wavefront Autostudio. This surfacing software is excellent for creating advanced shapes and high quality surfaces. The program has outstanding interface and view handling and makes the user almost one with the 3d object. This is an expensive program which retails at approx $70.000 for a full version. For animation and some times also rendering I tend to use Maya, another great software from Alias Wavefront.
Off course you could use any other 3d program to draw cars even if they don't have the same kind of surface tools and evaluation tools. I would recommend rhinoceros 3d for modelling and some other program like Maya, 3dstudiomax or Lightwave for rendering.

Do you need to be a good artist or does it come with practice?
I think talent and passion comes hand in hand but of course if you spend allot of time you will truly improve your skill.
